Razorblade Reviews: Real Genius

Hey people, how about a little...

A blogging vampire named Chet who blogs about movies, Vampires, Horror, Hot Chicks, Pop Culture and a ridiculous amount of other Crap!!

And for tonight we have an underappreciated 80's classic...

Yeah, well what about that time I found you naked with a bowl of Jello??

Real Genius

Info:

Director-- Martha Coolidge
Writer--- Neal Isreal

Starring--- Val Kilmer
Gabriel Jarrett
Michelle Meyrink
William Atherton

Year: 1985

Company: TriStar Enertainment

The Basic Scoop, The Poop, The Lowdown:

A young 15 year old prodigy named Mitch (Jarrett) is accepted on a probationary basis to Pacific Tech to help their crack super geeks on their super duperish laser project. (Lasers were like OMG SOO chic' in the 80's!! ;) ) But when Mitch meets his new roommate Chris Knight (Kilmer) A.K.A. the reigning senior super nerd stud of the campus (and super SMARTASS) he learns a heckofalot more than just the phasing states of bromide and other such geeky gibberishes...and stuff!!

Everything is spiffier in a spiffy Chef's hat!!

What's Pretty Good:

The cast! Despite virtually everyone save Kilmer being basically unknown to most people, (Though if you've seen some cult 80's movies or Napoleon Dynamite you may recognize a few faces) they do seem to flow together well in their performances. Even though this is one of only two major comedic performances by Kilmer (at least on purpose anyway! ;) ) he clearly shows why he should do more comedy. He simply steals the show. His snarky, devil-may-care-mixed with sly Bugs Bunny and frat-boy perv attitude of Chris SHOULD be a textbook case on how dudes should pick up chicks...or err something like that. :P The writing is crisp, quick-draw one liners, innuedo and puns, almost like...as Remmy would say, "Marxian" or as I WOULD say...like the old dude in the 30's with the funny mustache.

A great 80's "time-warp capsule" film.

What Kinda Sorta, Really, Really Sucks:

Not much...but a few things must be said. It's for the most part a typical "College Campus" flick....the different "Niche"" stock characters are easily recognizable (The cool guy, the loser nerd, the villainous authority figure, etc) all in the style of Animal House which set the standard. The subplot is also typical to many of the "Youth Flicks" of the 1980's...suspect all authority...defy the military industrial complex win the Cold War with peace, love and pranks (or even 99 Red Balloons

.... or Jiffy Pop !!

Overall Film Grade: B

A solid, entertaining cult 80's college comedy film. Certainly not the best flick of this type ever made, but an unsung charmer that's actually better in my opinion than the far well-known Weird Science If you dig cult comedies, you should enjoy this one!

Gotta love Chris Knight's CLASSIC fashion sense!!
